iPhone repair: original vs compatible parts, which to choose?
Original Apple parts or compatible ones to repair your iPhone? We explain the differences, advantages and disadvantages of each option.
When it comes time to repair your iPhone, one question keeps coming up: should you go for original Apple parts or compatible ones? It's a topic that causes confusion, fuelled by misconceptions and sometimes misleading marketing. At Safe Réparation, we've been repairing iPhones for 13 years and have tested hundreds of suppliers. Here is our honest and complete analysis.
What is an original Apple part?
An original part (also called OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a component manufactured by Apple or its official subcontractors (Samsung Display for OLED screens, for example). These parts are identical to those fitted at the factory on your new iPhone.
Until recently, original Apple parts were only available through Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers (AASP). Since 2022, Apple launched the Self Service Repair programme making certain parts available to the general public, but at high prices and with software calibration constraints.
What is a compatible part?
A compatible (or aftermarket) part is manufactured by a third party that reproduces the specifications of the original part. Quality varies enormously depending on the manufacturer and part grade. There are generally three levels: budget parts (lower quality, best avoided), premium parts (very close to original) and A+ grade or hard OLED parts (nearly identical to original).
The comparison: original vs compatible
Display quality: for screens, an original Apple part offers the exact colours, brightness and contrast of your new iPhone. A good premium compatible screen is very close, with 95 to 98% of the performance. The difference is virtually imperceptible for most users. However, a low-end screen will have washed-out colours and lower brightness.
Price: this is THE major difference. An original Apple screen can cost 50 to 100% more than a premium compatible screen. For example, for an iPhone 14, an original screen costs around €350 at Apple versus €199 for a premium screen at Safe.
Warranty: at Apple, the repair is guaranteed for 90 days. At Safe Réparation, we guarantee all our parts, whether original or compatible, for 12 months. This is a mark of confidence in the quality of our components.
Features: with original parts, all features are preserved (True Tone, automatic brightness, etc.). With the best compatible screens, True Tone is preserved in most cases thanks to IC chip transfer. Our technicians at Safe systematically perform this transfer.
Our recommendation at Safe Réparation
After 13 years of experience and over 50,000 devices repaired, here is our sincere advice: for the vast majority of users, a premium compatible part offers the best value for money. The quality difference with the original is minimal, but the savings are significant.
